Public Art Will Complement 7 Rehabbed ‘L’ Stations
The Chicago Transit Authority has kicked off a search for artists to create public art work for seven Red Line North ‘L’ stations that are currently undergoing rehabilitation.
The CTA today issued a Request for Proposals seeking artists who have an interest in seeing their art enhance public space to submit their qualifications to the CTA. Prior public art experience is not a requirement. The
RFP and information about the program is posted on the CTA’s website at www.transitchicago.com.
“Public art is part of the fabric of our communities here in Chicago, including at CTA stations across the city,” said CTA President Forrest Claypool. “Original artwork adds immeasurable value not only to our stations and communities, but the overall transit experience for our riders.”
The CTA already has more than 50 works of art at 41 stations along the Pink, Red and Brown Lines. “Expanding the CTA’s collection of permanent art is a valuable investment for our system and the communities they serve,” said Elizabeth Kelley, who is curating the new public art for the seven CTA Red Line stations.
Local, national and international artists are invited to apply. Applicants are asked to submit their qualifications and portfolio for consideration per the instructions in the Request for Proposals posted on www.transitchicago.com. An evaluation committee will then select approximately 25 artists from all submissions based on artistic merit, qualifications and professional recognition of the artists, and artists’ written statements of interest.
Submissions must be delivered in person or by mail no later than 3:30 p.m. October 10, 2012 to CTA Headquarters, 567 W. Lake St., 2nd Floor Bid Office, Chicago, Illinois, 60661.
The group of about 25 artists will then be asked to submit specific art proposals and the seven artists ranked highest among the group will be offered a commission.
The CTA will discuss the Public Art Project at two community meetings on September 18, 2012 at the Broadway Armory, 5917 N. Broadway at 6:30 p.m.; and on September 20, 2012 at United Church of Rogers Park, 1545 W. Morse Ave., at 7 p.m.
Federal Formula Funds provided by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) will be used to pay for the total project budget for all seven stations. The CTA’s budget for the seven stations will not exceed $525,000.
