The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) will host a meeting on Tuesday, October 23, to gather community input on public art work that will be commissioned and installed at the seven rail stations undergoing rehabilitation work along the North Red Line.
As part of the $86 million
Red North Station Interim Improvements Project, CTA will commission and install new artwork to further enhance the rehabilitated stations, which serve as gateways to some of the most ethnically diverse communities in the city. Stations that will receive art installations are Lawrence, Argyle, Berwyn, Thorndale, Granville, Morse and Jarvis.
To assist the CTA in selecting appropriate artwork for each station, customers, residents and community members are invited to attend the following meeting and provide input on what they would like to see incorporated or reflected in the art being commissioned for their respective stations:

In September, CTA issued a Request for Proposals seeking local, national and international artists to submit for consideration their qualifications and portfolios for consideration to create public art for one of the seven stations. The bid process is now closed and submissions are no longer being accepted.
Qualified entries are being reviewed by an evaluation committee, which will then select approximately 25 artists based on artistic merit, qualifications and professional recognition of the artists, and artists’ written statements of interest. The group of about 25 artists will then be asked to submit specific art proposals and the seven artists ranked highest among the group will be offered a commission.
The artist selection process is expected to be complete by early spring 2013, and the installation of artwork is expected to begin in the fall of 2013.
Two additional community meetings regarding the art project were held in September at the Broadway Armory and the United Church of Rogers Park. Feedback and input from all three meetings will be collected and provided to the 25 selected artists for consideration as they prepare their art proposals.
More than 50 works of art are currently on display at 41 CTA stations along the Brown, Pink and Red lines. The CTA will make the final selection of artwork and maintain ownership rights to all artwork created under this program.
Federal Formula Funds provided by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) will be used to pay for the total project budget for all seven stations. The CTA’s budget for the seven stations will not exceed $525,000.
