contract awarded to contractor Kiewit Infrastructure) has not only improved the quality and experience for riders and neighbors; it has also provided a life-extension for these stations that will last for many years.
The rehabilitation of these seven stations is not part of the Red & Purple Modernization Project (RPM), which is currently in the early stages of planning and will require several more years of planning and identified sources of funding. Funding for the Red North Station Interim Improvements is part of the agency’s $1 billion Red Line Capital Investment initiative announced in November 2011.
In general, project work at these stations included: viaduct repairs, platform repairs or replacement, station water proofing, lighting improvements and new station house finishes (i.e. floors, doors, windows and lighting).

Q&A
When did work occur at my station?
All seven stations are now open following six-week temporary closures between June and December 2012, which allowed crews to perform the necessary interior, exterior and track and viaduct work . All work was completed on time and within budget.

What happens to these interim improvements when the Red and Purple Modernization (RPM) project is implemented?
The reason we spent money on interim improvements is because we could no longer postpone repairs that needed our immediate attention. We want to be good stewards of the infrastructure we have now, as we continue to plan for the future and pursue additional funding.
Generally, we expect these interim improvements to be followed by implementation of the RPM project with new structures that will have a significantly longer useful life. That work could be many years away based on availability of funds and the completion of the planning and approval process.
What’s happening at the Wilson Station?
The planned reconstruction of the
Wilson Red Line station is slated to begin in fall 2014, and will replace the badly deteriorated station that was built in 1923 and will provide a new transfer point between the Red Line and Purple Line Express.
Why isn't Sheridan, Bryn Mawr or Loyola on the list?
We plan to make improvements to each of these stations; however, each has a separate plan:
The $1B Red Line investment will also help fund station improvement project work at the Sheridan and Bryn Mawr stations. However, these two stations will require more intensive engineering and so will need to be designed separately and completed separate from the interim repairs made to the seven stations receiving the interim repairs.
Working in conjunction with Loyola University Chicago, we were able to provide similar interim station improvements at the Loyola station. This work was separately designed and constructed in order to interface with Loyola’s plans to construct a new plaza adjacent to the station. These improvements began in the middle of 2012 and were completed the summer of 2013.
