David Lozano
Smalti marble, glass, ceramic
2025
David Lozano reimagines traditional notions of beauty through Edgewater’s rich architectural and cultural history. In his signature baroque style, he layers photographs with terracotta details, oval windows inspired by a nearby residence, and a blue stencil pattern referencing Louis Sullivan’s original Chicago Stock Exchange design. Cherry blossoms recall the neighborhood’s early 1900s agricultural past, when orchards and farmland covered the area.
Born in Houston, Lozano is a Chicago mixed media artist and faculty member at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He gratefully acknowledges the Edgewater Historical Society for its support with research and archival materials.

Roots with Diversity
Dorothy Hughes
Hand-made ceramic tile
2014
In this hand-crafted artwork, Dorothy Hughes blends abstraction with realism, capturing the essence of Edgewater’s natural and built environments. Organic elements—lush foliage and the blue water of Lake Michigan—invite the surrounding environment into the composition, while architectural forms reflect the neighborhood’s historic character. Together, these elements create a harmonious balance, offering space for the viewer’s imagination.
Dorothy Hughes is a Chicago artist specializing in ceramics and fiber arts. Her work is included in numerous collections, including those of the Art Institute of Chicago, Northwestern University, and Knoll International.
